My Son and ’Mr. John’

John was a core member who lived a full and vibrant life. He spent the last years of his life living with Alzheimer’s. The disease took away his ability to talk and walk, but never touched his ability to reach others. As a mom in a L’Arche community I often bring my children to the homes and gatherings. My boys spent lots of time with "Mr.John" and appreciated him for who he was. I didn’t realize the depths of their relationship with him until we were playing one day on "Pirate Ship Park," an accessible play structure at our local beach. As we played I looked over to see my oldest son with his arms outstretched as if he were pushing something—a wheelchair perhaps. It was then that I heard him say, "Come on Mr. John, I’ll help you up and you can play with us." I marveled at how this man had impacted and built a relationship with my 5 year old, without words, or actions, but by his mere presence.
